Behind every successful man is a woman.
Behind the fall of a successful man is usually another woman.
Sophie Mayhew looks like she has the perfect life. Wife of rising political star John F Mayhew, a man who is one step away from the top job in the government, her glamour matches his looks, power, breeding and money. But John has made some stupid mistakes along the way, some of which are threatening to emerge. Still, all this can still be swept under the carpet as long as Sophie 'the trophy' plays her part in front of the cameras.
But the words that come out of Sophie’s mouth one morning on the doorstep of their country house are not the words the spin doctors put in there. Bursting out of the restrictive mould she has been in since birth, Sophie flees to a place that was special to her as a child, a small village on the coast where she intends to be alone.
But once there, she finds she becomes part of a community that warms her soul and makes her feel as if she is breathing properly for the first time. Sophie knows she won't be left in peace for long. Now she must decide: where does her real future lie?

I give it - 5/5
My review - I adore Milly Johnson. Her books never fail to bring a smile to my face and have me gripped and never wanting to put her book down. The Magnificent Mrs Mayhew has to be my favourite by her so far. It was so enjoyable and I really enjoyed all of the characters and where this story took me.
In this book we follow Sophie Mayhew. She is the wife of a politician and she has always believed her role was to support her husband. She has always done what she has been told by her husband and her cold family but suddenly, a scandal happens and Sophie finally decides she has had enough. She escapes and disguises herself as a french woman called Pom in a place she was happy. People adore her and she adores the people she meets. No one takes her for granted or makes her feel insignificant. She starts to feel herself and that she is finally happy and not having to play a part. She has a choice to make, will she go back to a life where she was unhappy and forced to be the perfect wife or live this life that makes her happy.
Sophie grew up in a wealthy family. They where cold and then when she married into unemotional family she thought this is how she had to be but, once she broke free from them and got to be her true self and finally be happy she understood that the life she was from wasn't as perfect as people made it out to be. I really enjoyed reading about Sophie and seeing her growth throughout this book. You can't keep a mask up forever and seeing Sophie emerge from a life that wasn't the best to a better life was wonderful to read. I was rooting for her throughout the book and just wanted her to have the best life she deserved with people who loved her for her and never wanted her to pretend to be something she wasn't.
Overall my favourite book by Milly so far. It was captivating and a story that will stay with me for a long time. She has really written something special here and I can't recommend this book enough!
