Life in Bearmouth is one of hard labour, the sunlit world above the mine a distant memory. Reward will come in the next life with the benevolence of the Mayker. New accepts everything - that is, until the mysterious Devlin arrives. Suddenly, Newt starts to look at Bearmouth with a fresh perspective, questioning the system, and setting in motion a chain of events that could destroy their entire world.
In this powerful and brilliantly original debut novel, friendship creates strength, courage is hard-won and hope is the path to freedom.

I give it - 5/5
My review - I adored this book. It was a fantastic debut YA from Liz.
It is compelling, engrossing and just one of those books that when you pick up you won't be able to put it down. It was gripping from the first page and I just really enjoyed every second of it.
I really enjoyed her writing style and it flowed really nicely with the story. The unique world she has created. In this world, Bearmouth is a mine and boys and men are forced to work, sleep and basically live for a small wage. I've hardly read much about mining so it was interesting to read about in this book. This book is Newt's POV who is just learning the letters as the story goes along.
A wonderful debut that needs to be read by everyone. It is a book I will keep recommending to everyone. It is unique and full of characters you will adore. It is gripping, daunting and creepy and just so much more that made this book one of my favourites of the year. A world that is scary yet hopeful. In a world where religion is used as a force of control.
It is brilliant.
