Each year, eight beautiful girls are chosen as Paper Girls to serve the king. It's the highest honour they could hope for...and the most demeaning.
This year, there's a ninth.
And instead of paper, she's made of fire.
Lei is a member of the Paper caste, the lowest and most persecuted class of people in Ikhara. Ten years ago, her mother was snatched by the royal guards, and her fate remains unknown. Now, the guards are back and this time it's Lei they're after - the girl with the golden eyes, whose rumoured beauty has piqued the king's interest.
Over weeks of training in the opulent but oppressive palace, Lei and eight other girls learn the skills and charm that befit a king's consort. There, Lei does the unthinkable - she falls in love. Her forbidden romance becomes enmeshed with an explosive plot that threatens her world's entire way of life. Lei, still the wide-eyed country girl at heart, must decide how far she's willing to go for justice and revenge.

My review

~I was gifted a copy from the publishers - all opinions are my own~

I give it
- 5/5

My review - You ever just read a book and after you've finished you can't stop thinking about it? That is exactly what this book has done to me. It has stayed with me for a long time after reading it and I just loved every second of it. I cannot wait for the next one and to see where Natasha takes this story. She has written such a fantastic book that I recommend it to everyone if you haven't picked it up yet!

A wonderful diverse LGBTQ+ read that just had me gripped from the very beginning!

In this book we follow Lei. She is a paper caste (human) and lives in a world where people have mixed with animals to create some strange creatures. Lei is kidnapped by the Bull King who is a moon caste (demon) and is brought to the kingdom as a gift to the king to become his mistress. It is a years old tradition for the king to have paper girls, a lady of the court and someone to warm his bed. Lei is chosen because of her eyes, they make her stand out. To survive the king and the kingdom she knows she needs to grow a backbone to help her get through this and possibly give her the determination and love to fight.

I just adore this book. Lei is a fantastic character who I really enjoyed reading about and reading about how she becomes this strong, determined woman who will fight for what is right and for what she loves. Natasha is a fantastic writer. I adore fantasy and this world she has built with Malaysian and Chinese culture just makes it even more amazing.

I never wanted to put this book down and I just cannot wait for the next one. The writing was beautiful, the world was stunning and the characters where so interesting, complex and I just really enjoyed reading about them all. This book is magic as soon as you turn the first page and you just get captivated by her writing and details that you just won't want to put it down!
