No one expects a princess to be brutal. And Lada Dragwyla likes it that way. Ever since she and her brother were abandoned by their father to be raised in the Ottoman sultan's courts, Lada has known that ruthlessness is the key to survival. For the lineage that makes her and her brother special also makes them targets. Lada hones her skills as a warrior as she nurtures plans to wreak revenge on the empire that holds her captive. Then she and Radu meet the sultan's son, Mehmed, and everything changes. Now Mehmed unwittingly stands between Lada and Radu as they transform from siblings to rivals, and the ties of love and loyalty that bind them together are stretched to breaking point. The first of an epic new trilogy starring the ultimate anti-princess who does not have a gentle heart. Lada knows how to wield a sword, and she'll stop at nothing to keep herself and her brother alive.
My review - This book was everything I needed and more. I had heard from a few of my friends, that they loved this book so I jumped right in...and it was fantastic. I was gripped from the very beginning, where we meet Lada when she is born and all the way to the end of the book where Lada has grown into one badass anti-princess and it was just brilliant. I didn't put this book down once and finished it in one sitting-it is such a page turner that you have to keep reading to see what will happen next.
Lada is brutal. Ever since she was younger she is sassy, argumentative and would rather solve problems with her fist then talk. Other people are afraid of her, even her younger brother but, she does stick up for him even when he get's on her nerves. This story goes over quite a few years so we read from when Lada was born until she is around 18 years old. We follow her and her brothers story as they travel to different places and are traded of by their father and given to the sultan...there they meet his son and friendships blossom. Radu doesn't like to fight and he prefers to be friendly to people. He can strike up a conversation with anyone-him and Lada are polar opposites. But then trouble arises and they have to come up with a plan to stop this from happening but, feelings are going to get in the way and family and friendships are going to be broken, can they deal with all of this and the danger that is coming?
Lada and Radu weren't close growing up as she would prefer to fight and play with her friend and Radu wasn't the fighting kind but as they grow older things change and they both have to come to terms with growing up and things changing and how Mehmed could get between them.
I was amazed to see that this story was taken from Vlad the impaler which Kiersten has changed to Lada which I loved. Beside from action and romance this book also has a lot of history, drama and religion in it and it all ties together nicely in this action packed book. I was so happy to see that this would be a trilogy. I am not ready to let go of these characters, especially after that ending! Everything is going to change and I don't know if it's going to be for the best or if everything will get worst and I cannot wait to see where Kiersten goes with this trilogy. I really enjoyed the history of this book. I'm not really good with history fiction but I love what Kiersten did with this and gave it her own twists and this book was filled with them! I was not expecting certain twists and turns in this book but I loved it and I am just too excited for the next book.
