They killed my mother.
They took our magic.
They tried to bury us.
Now we rise.
Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zélie's Reaper mother summoned forth souls.
But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.
Now Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.
Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers and her growing feelings for an enemy.

My review

I give it - 5/5

My review - Well, if you haven't picked this book up already why not?
This book has to be one of my favourites of 2018. You can see they hype around this book all over the place and, for good reason. This book is just brilliant. I went into this book with only knowing very little about it and I was just blown away. Tomi is a fantastic writer. She really knows how to grip the reader from the beginning and bring you into her world and not let go until the end and even then you will want to stay to see what is going to happen and where Tomi is taking these characters.

I just can't get over this book and how beautifully written it was. Can I please have a sequel? I am ready to read more from Tomi and again, if you haven't picked it up please go and get it.  A brilliant fantasy novel that has literally taken over my brain and it was all I could think about for ages after I finished it.

In this book we meet Zelie. She is strong, brave, fierce, stubborn. She has anger running threw her since she can not celebrate her Maji heritage. Magic was wiped out years ago and during a massacre, a very brutal massacre called The Raid which killed Zelie's mother. So, she learns to fight so she doesn't have the same fate.

She is has to leave her home to secure not only her own, but her friends and family future. On her journey she meets Amari. A princess who is on the run and she has something, something that has the power to bring magic back for good.

This is a story of finding a way, to overcome the bad, to bring back what once was and to defeat the evil. I really love the family dynamic in this book. I love the relationships between the two girls and their brothers as a strong family relationship is always great to have in this book. Each character is so different, they have their own quirks, their own ways of doing things but, they all know they want to fight for this.

A brilliant, magical, fantasy story that had me gripped and the ending had me shocked and needing more.
