Long before she was the Queen of Hearts, Catherine Pinkerton was just a girl who wanted to fall in love. Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland, and a favorite of the unmarried King of Hearts, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, all she wants is to open a shop with her best friend. But according to her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for the young woman who could be the next queen. Then Cath meets Jest, the handsome and mysterious court joker. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the king and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into an intense, secret courtship. Cath is determined to define her own destiny and fall in love on her terms. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.

I give it - 4/5
My review - I love The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer and I was so excited when I heard she was bringing out a book about The Queen Of Hearts before she became The Queen Of Hearts, before she became the emotionless, evil queen we all know.
Catherine loves to bake and she is hoping to open her own bakery one day. She also wants to marry for love but, with a mother who wants the best for her daughter, which means making her stand out at balls to the king, making sure she gets noticed by the right person. She knows what her parents want for her but, she wants to follow her heart. She meets the court Joker known as Jest and then everything seems to go crazy for Cath. Can she break free from her family and follow her own heart? Or will the monsters and myths of the land break her heart?
This story is one of those that you know how it's going to end but, you're still hoping for a different ending. I loved Jest. He was adorable! I really enjoyed reading Caths story. I loved reading her thoughts and how she dealt with a lot of the things thrown at her in this book. She has to deal with a crazy king and even crazier parents who are pushing her to marry the king so she can become queen. But, she doesn't want that. All she wants to do is open a bakery. I loved all the quirky characters in this book as it just takes you back into this world. Reading the story of Cath really broke my heart as I just wanted to give her a big hug. I loved the transition as well from Cath to Queen. It was crazy to read but it was brilliant.
This is a book that has made me want to re-read Alice In Wonderland so badly but I will probably have different thoughts on the Queen now.
Marissa Meyer has written a brilliant book full of magic, mayhem, monsters and hearts. It is a book that will take you on a rollarcoaster of emotions and you won't want to put it down until you have finished. I was gripped from the very beginning of this book and I so wish it wasn't over. I cannot wait to see what Marissa writes next!
