Picture

Destined to destroy empires, Mia Corvere is only ten years old when she is given her first lesson in death. Six years later, the child raised in shadows takes her first steps towards keeping the promise she made on the day she lost everything. But the chance to strike against such powerful enemies will be fleeting, so if she is to have her revenge, Mia must become a weapon without equal. She must prove herself against the deadliest of friends and enemies, and survive the tutelage of murderers, liars and daemons at the heart of a murder cult. The Red Church is no ordinary school, but Mia is no ordinary student. The shadows love her. And they drink her fear.

My review

~I was sent a copy from the publishers-all opinions are my own~

I give it - 5/5

My review - I kind of did this weird laughing/sobbing sound after I finished this boo. My heart and head still hurt after reading it, but in a good way. I was scared going into this book as when I received the proof it is massive but I just jumped right into it. I didn't know much about this book and I didn't want too and I'm glad I just went into it without reading too much into it.

This book is possibly my favourite book of the year. Jay Kristoff is a fantastic story-teller. I have only ever read Illuminae by him, which he co-writed with Amie Kaufman, but I can tell I will be defiantly reading more of his books. This was just so different from any other book I have read. It was fast paced, had amazing characters, a heartbreaking storyline and a not-cat. It all fitted together perfectly and I cannot wait for the next book. I am so glad this wasn't a standalone novel as I still have some questions that need answering and I would miss the characters.

I have to say though, I was warned for page 553 but I was not prepared in the slightest. I got so caught up in the story that by the time I got to that page it was too late.
And my heart was ripped out.

Well played Jay, well played.

But still, this was just such a tragic scene and I can see why they warned me about it before I read it.

My heart still can't take it, actual tears happened.

What I adored about this story was the footnotes. I've noticed that some people said they where going to bypass the footnotes BUT DON'T! They are so good and even funny at times and they really added to this story.

This is one big book and if you're scared of jumping in, don't be. You won't regret reading it after you've started it. It draws you in from the very first page and won't let you go until you've finished it. I love how it was filled with footnotes, flashbacks and more. It was a wonderful story written by a fantastic author. Follow the story of Mia, who is an orphan who is trying to avenge her father who was killed in front of her. She knows she is a killer and shows know fear towards people, even though we do read sometimes that she does feel a little bit sad for those she has killed but, she has to show that she doesn't care. She suffers a lot, especially with what happened to her when she was younger with her father killed and her mother and little brother basically thrown into the depths of hell.

She is an assassin. She trains at the red church where there are other assassins fighting against each other to become a blade. They have to be careful of who the trust. There is death, lies, betrayal and even some romance. Jay has wrapped it all up nicely in this ruthless book. He really knows how to get the readers heart pumping when reading. I cannot wait for the second book, even though I am scared considering what he did to us with the first book.

A fantastic new book from Jay Kristoff and everyone needs to give this book a  read....and try and cope with me.
