I give it - 4/5
My review - As you all know, this is very different from the kind of books I read. I've been wanting to get out of my comfort zone so I was happy when I got sent a copy of this book to review as I knew this was way out of my comfort zone. I wasn't sure if I would like it or even enjoy it but I surprised myself by really enjoying this book! It did take me a few chapters to get into it but then I was gripped and couldn't put it down. This is a really big book but I feel like I just flew right through it as the time just passed by and I would recommend this to everyone! Everyone who is the same as me who wants to try some books out of their comfort zone as I think everyone would really enjoy it.
This story is about Violet. The prologue is in 1919 and then we go back to 1913. Violet is in a relationship with one of her fathers employee's, Frank. But their affair is overshadowed by the first world war.
I love that the author has used his own family history in this book and it made it that more beautiful. Even though it is about the war it has more focuses around family and love. I love the showing of the bravery of the soldiers. facing hard times and about a mother who bravely gets on with everything going on and I loved every second of it-I cannot wait to read more from David as he tells a wonderful story with his own family history within it.
