![]() By day, seventeen-year-old Kiera Johnson is a college student, and one of the only black kids at Jefferson Academy. By night, she joins hundreds of thousands of black gamers who duel worldwide in the secret online role-playing card game, SLAY. No one knows Kiera is the game developer - not even her boyfriend, Malcolm. But when a teen in Kansas City is murdered over a dispute in the SLAY world, the media labels it an exclusionist, racist hub for thugs. With threats coming from both inside and outside the game, Kiera must fight to save the safe space she's created. But can she protect SLAY without losing herself? BUY HERE ~I was gifted a copy from the publisher - all opinions are my own~ I give it - 5/5 My review - what a fantastic book! Possibly my favourite of the year. It was amazing and I really enjoyed every second of it. It is a book that everyone needs to pick up when it's out. In this book we follower Kiera. She is in high school. Kiera is the creator of the game SLAY. An online game for the black community. She wanted to make this place for black gamers after dealing with all the racism in the gaming world. A place you can go and play without getting threats and slurs thrown at you when all you want to do is to enjoy the game you're playing and that is what Kiera has made. The game has half a million users and no one knows the creator of the game and Kiera wants to keep it that way. But, after a gamer is killed because of a conflict about the game, SLAY is plastered all over the news saying it's racist and discriminates. Kiera now has to deal with all the trolls and haters whilst still trying to hide the fact that she is the game creator but, seeing all the hate for the game would get to you. Brittney has written a fantastic book. Her characters are wonderful, I loved reading about each one and finding out more about them and about the game. This online game that Kiera had made and how it has such a big impact for all of the black gamers and how they love it and with all the hate going on Kiera keeps her head up, she is strong and really is an amazing main character to follow. Kiera and two others are the only black people at her school and constantly get asked stupid questions so, this online game is a fantastic place for her for her to meet other people who share the same thoughts and differences and celebrate each other and it is being threatened. The ending was amazing and just WOW to what happens. An amazing story from Brittney! I also want to point out that this book was not written for me and I want to make sure this book gets the attention it deserves for young black readers. I also recommend heading to goodreads for reviews from own voices on this book!
