A striking fantasy tale of dark magic, dangerous politics, and discovering your true self?perfect for fans ofGame of Thrones, An Ember in the Ashes and A Court of Thorns and Roses. Sixteen years ago the Kingdom of Winter was conquered and its citizens enslaved, leaving them without magic or a monarch. Now the Winterians' only hope for freedom is the eight survivors who managed to escape, and who have been waiting for the opportunity to steal back Winter's magic and rebuild the kingdom ever since. Orphaned as an infant during Winter's defeat, Meira has lived her whole life as a refugee. Training to be a warrior?and desperately in love with her best friend, Winter's future king?she would do anything to help Winter rise to power again. So when scouts discover the location of the ancient locket that can restore Winter's magic, Meira decides to go after it herself?only to find herself thrust into a world of evil magic and dangerous politics?and ultimately comes to realize that her destiny is not, never has been, her own.
My review - Here is another book Beth has left far too long to read. I got sent the third book not long ago so I thought it was finally time to pick up the first book.
Why has it taken you so long Beth? I have no idea because this book was amazing and brilliant and everything I wanted. It had me gripping the book, hypnotized by the words as I couldn't put it down until I had finished reading it.
It is that good. Sara has written such a fantastic book but not only that, she has created such a beautiful world full of wars, drama, secrets and seasons. Each kingdom is a different season-Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Winter is not in very good shape. Only a few Winterians have escaped as most have been captured by Angra, the very evil man in this book. They where enslaved sixteen years ago but 25 people escaped and they are ready to save their people.
We follow Meira. She is getting trained by William or Sir as she calls him. Her parents died when she was younger and she, with the rest of the escaped Winterians are planning how to get Winter back to the way it was as they already have the heir to throne, Mather with them. Meira starts to have some strange dreams of a woman named Hannah-the late queen of Winter. Why is she having them?
She is skillfully trained and she knows what she has to do to help Winter become powerful again. But, going in to save her people will open a lot of secrets. Secrets she isn't expecting and not ready for. She has to learn to control and be the fighter she knows she is. She finds herself in a place full of dark magic and Angra.
Can Angra be defeated? What are the secrets? You'll have to find out by reading this book.
This book took me a ride of an adventure. Meira is a fantastic character to follow. She knows what she must do, but growing up as refugee and being in love with the future king hasn't really helped her out. You can tell that all she really wants in love. Her parents died when she was little which made her an orphan and the only father figure she had was Sir who yelled at her once for calling him father and Mather, the boy she can't have. She grows a lot within the first book as she comes to terms with her future and the future of Winter.
A brilliant start to this trilogy and I cannot wait to get stuck in to the last two books! I'll probably take the last one slow as already, I don't want this trilogy to be over but I can't wait to see where Sara takes us within this world.
