Caroline Oresteia is destined for the river. Her father is a wherryman, as was her grandmother. All Caro needs is for the river god to whisper her name, and her fate is sealed. But at seventeen, Caro may be too late. So when pirates burn ships and her father is arrested, Caro volunteers to transport mysterious cargo in exchange for his release. Secretly, Caro hopes that by piloting her own wherry, the river god will finally speak her name. But when the cargo becomes more than Caro expected, she finds herself caught in a web of politics and lies. With much more than her father's life at stake, Caro must choose between the future she knows, and the one she could have never imagined.

I give it - 4/5
My review - First things first, how beautiful is this book cover? It is definitely one of my favourite book covers ever as it is so beautiful.
Now on to the story, this was a fantastic book. I love the world building and pretty much everything about it. It took me a few pages to get into it but, once I did I couldn't stop reading it. It was wonderful and one of those books that captivate you and take you on a journey. I didn't want this book to end.
If you are going to pick up a book this year I recommend this one. It involves pirates, love/hate relationships, amazing women captains who are badass, smugglers, dark power and so much more! If this doesn't make you want to read this book I don't know why because all of those elements for this book just made it into a brilliant read that I can't stop thinking about.
Caro is a brilliant character to follow. She is feisty and head strong. Her dad gets thrown into jail for not smuggling something for the royalty so she does it. She loves the water and will stab anyone who insults her ship. A fantastic character who I adore for being the kickass female she is.
A book about empowered women, the sea, monsters, magic, love, drama, PIRATES! And so much more. A book I can't recommend enough!
