Where Nirrim lives, crime abounds, a harsh tribunal rules, and society's pleasures are reserved for the High Kith. Life in the Ward is grim and punishing. People of her low status are forbidden from sampling sweets or wearing colours. You either follow the rules, or pay a tithe and suffer the consequences. Nirrim keeps her head down, and a dangerous secret close to her chest. But then she encounters is, a rakish traveller from far away, who whispers rumours that the High Kith possess magic. Sid tempts Nirrim to seek that magic for herself. But to do that, Nirrim must surrender her old life. She must place her trust in this sly stranger who asks, above all, not to be trusted.

I give it - 5/5
My review - I was so excited to hear that Marie was writing a new book and this was everything I wanted and more. She is one of my favourite authors and her writing is just so beautiful and I adored every second of this book.
Everything in this book is spot on and the way it ended has left me needing the next one asap! It was cruel and I loved it.
We meet Nirrim in this book. She is an orphan and half Kith. Half Kith are at the bottom of society and will get punished for the littlest of things and High Kith are at the top with the best life of freedom. Nirrim works at the ward and likes to keep herself busy and also tries to keep her secrets at bay. When she meets traveller Sid things start to change. Sid makes her question everything, everything about her life and the Half Kith, about the society she lives in.
First I want to talk about the romance. I love fantasy, I love romance but this was another level. There was banter, drama, laughs and of course a lot of flirting. I love how the romance did not over shadow the plot and it just worked together very nicely and I couldn't put it down once. Marie has such a way with words and how she pulled everything together and I just enjoyed it all. This book does tackle abuse and I think she did it in a really good but sensitive way.
This book was enchanting and I am so excited for the next one. This book is not an easy read. The life of Nirrim is not the nicest or filled with sunshine and Marie does a really great job of showing us the dark side of this society and how Nirrim is treated in an awful way but, there is also light.
And also the LGBT rep was just everything. Along with this romance this is just wonderful there is adventure and twists and turns that will keep you wanting more and more and the sequel.
A fantastic new book from Marie and I cannot wait for the next one!
