The Wicked Deep

Two centuries ago, in the small, isolated town, three sisters were sentenced to death for witchery. Stones were tied to their ankles and they were drowned in the deep waters surrounding the town. Now, for a brief time each summer, the sisters return from the depths, stealing the bodies of three weak-hearted girls so that they may seek their revenge, luring boys into the harbor and pulling them down to their watery deaths.

Like many locals, seventeen-year-old Penny Talbot has accepted the fate of the town. But this year, on the eve of the sisters’ return, a boy named Bo Carter arrives; unaware of the danger he has just stumbled into or the fact that his arrival will change everything...

Mistrust and lies spread quickly through the salty, rain-soaked streets. The townspeople turn against one another. Penny and Bo suspect each other of hiding secrets. And death comes swiftly to those who cannot resist the call of the sisters.

But only Penny sees what others cannot. And she will be forced to choose: save Bo, or save herself.

I give it
- 5/5

My review - Well, I've just read the best book of 2018.

I cannot get over this book. It was brilliant. I was hooked from the beginning. The story was gripping. The writing was beautiful and it just all flowed nicely together.

Each year, on June 1st the Swan sisters return and take over the bodies of girls to get their revenge on the town by drowning boys. This has been happening for 2 centuries, since the girls where blamed for being witches and where drowned by the townsfolk.

The whole town is ready for Swan season. Tourists come from around the world to see it happen. The town have accepted their fate and believe there is nothing they can do about it. On the eve of the sisters return a boy comes to town. Not a tourist and Penny, or main character, believes he is in danger. She offers him a job at her families lighthouse and wants to keep an eye on him. He isn't really saying what brought him to this town but, Penny knows something is up and he's hiding something. Before they know it, the first body shows up in the sea and they start to question which of the girls they have taken over.

But, Penny has a secret. She can see things others can't, and with the swan season slowly coming to a close and the sisters return to sea, Penny has to try and figure out what is going on and she has a hard choices coming ahead.

I just adored this book! I really loved how we got parts of the story about the sisters and their lives and, what happened to them. I really enjoyed reading about that and what brought it all on. Penny is a brilliant character. She was so insightful and wanted to do the right thing.

She wants to do what she can to save Bo and make sure he isn't taken by the sisters. She starts to care for him but, she is hiding something from him. Something he might not be able to forgive.

This story is more than a town with a curse. This is about trying to figure out who you are, letting go of the past, trying to move forward and love. Like, my heart broke reading this book. Some parts where so sad that I just wanted to hug the characters.

You will just adore this story. It is chilling and will call to you like the Swan sisters singing to the people. It is magical and brilliant and the story will keep you hooked from the beginning. The story is filled with so much that I don't want to give it away.

A story of a town with a curse. A story of a boy and girl. A story of trying to break the curse but, possibly loosing something in the process and, a story that comes with a twist you won't see coming.
