As a general's daughter in a vast empire that revels in war and enslaves those it conquers, Kestrel has two choices: she can join the military or get married. Kestrel has other ideas. One day, she is startled to find a kindred spirit in Arin, a young slave up for auction. Following her instinct, Kestrel buys him - and for a sensational price that sets the society gossips talking. It's not long before she has to hide her growing love for Arin. But he, too, has a secret and Kestrel quickly learns that the price she paid for him is much higher than she ever could have imagined. The first novel in a stunning new trilogy, The Winner's Curse is a story of romance, rumours and rebellion, where dirty secrets and careless alliances can be deadly - and everything is at stake.
My review - I am surprised I haven't read this book sooner as I just loved it so much. I kept putting it down and picking it up as I didn't want to rush it too much. I have heard mixed reviews on this book and the whole series in general but I can happily say that I enjoyed it and I loved everything.
I have a big love for authors that make their own fantasy world and the history behind it and that is what Marie has done and she has done it perfectly. It felt like I was there with Kestrel.
This story is about a girl, Kestrel. She is a generals daughter and she has to decide whether to get married or join the army and she is in no rush to decide but, her father wants her to hurry and decide and he hopes that she chooses the army. People believe that Kestrel is an amazing fighter, she is good but she isn't the best. She is better at strategizing and planning, she has a great mind for that.
One day she is out when she goes to an auction. An auction for slaves when she see's Arin and he is described as a blacksmith and can sing. That does it for Kestrel and she bids on him and wins. Arin comes to work for her home and the two of them share secrets and start to fall for each other. They argue, they laugh, they play games but, where does Arin go when he goes into the city? What could he possibly be hiding from her?
She get's told about The Winner's Curse - a curse that will happen on the person who won the bidding but, it can't be true? Can it?
I loved the chemistry between these two and they have to deal with a lot in this book. Secrets come out, and real reasons are bought forward which are going to break these two unless things happen.
I can't give too much away but the twist and turns in this book where fantastic! I like how we get to read about what Kestrel and Arin are both up to in certain situations and I've got to say that it did break my heart and I after reading the first book I devoured the next two in the trilogy as they just called to me.
This book was just brilliant and if you haven't started it yet the I defiantly suggest that you read it, I was wary at first but I'm so glad I gave it a read as I just loved it so much.
