Agnieszka loves her valley home, her quiet village, the forests and the bright shining river. But the corrupted wood stands on the border, full of malevolent power, and its shadow lies over her life. Her people rely on the cold, ambitious wizard, known only as the Dragon, to keep the wood's powers at bay. But he demands a terrible price for his help: one young woman must be handed over to serve him for ten years, a fate almost as terrible as being lost to the wood. The next choosing is fast approaching, and Agnieszka is afraid. She knows - everyone knows - that the Dragon will take Kasia: beautiful, graceful, brave Kasia - all the things Agnieszka isn't - and her dearest friend in the world. And there is no way to save her. But no one can predict how or why the Dragon chooses a girl. And when he comes, it is not Kasia he will take with him. From the author of the Temeraire series comes this hugely imaginative, engrossing and vivid fantasy novel, inspired by folk and fairy tales. It is perfect reading for fans of Robin Hobb and Trudi Canavan.

I give it - 5/5
My review - I think this has become my favourite fantasy book of 2015.
It was fantastic! I cannot get over how brilliant this book was! I devoured this book, I was gripped from the very first page and didn't stop until the last page.
In this story we follow Agnieszka, she lives a village that is surrounded by evil. The people of the village relay on the cold wizard known as the dragon to protect them from the corrupted wood, but he wants something in return. Every 10 years he chooses one girl, at the age of 17, to live with him in the tower for 10 years. Everyone thinks it's going to be Agnieszka best friend, Kasia who is beautiful and brave, but he doesn't choose Kasia. A lot of things come to light with the dragon choosing Agnieszka and the corrupted wood is getting stronger, there are evil forces at bay, and why does the prince come to them for help?
This has to be one of the best fantasy books I have read this year. It was just so brilliant and I devoured it in two sittings! This book has a little bit of everything, dark magic, romance, a great friendship between Agnieszka and Kasia, which I loved! I would also love a book from Kasia POV as I really loved her character.
Agnieszka was a fantastic main character! I enjoyed following her story, as she became such a strong female throughout the book. Her relationship with her friend and the dragon was really interesting to read.
This book was beautifully written and I really enjoyed every second of it. There was just something magical about this book that grabbed me from the first page and I was instantly transported into their world and I never wanted to leave.
An amazing read that I think everyone would enjoy!
