For those who know me know that I am a huge fan of Mary since I read her debut novel THE GOOD GIRL last year and was very excited when she agreed to this interview for my blog! Check it out below
Mary Kubica is the international bestselling author of THE GOOD GIRL (MIRA Books 2014). Her second novel PRETTY BABY will be available August 13, 2015.
1. Where did the idea for The Good Girl come from?
When I started writing THE GOOD GIRL, I had left my teaching career to stay home and care for my newborn daughter. I loved writing since I was a little girl, but this was the first story I wrote that I felt truly connected to. I felt a special bond with these characters in THE GOOD GIRL that I hadn't with any characters I had previously written. When I started the novel, all I had was a faint idea of a kidnapping that was not quite what it seemed to be, and after I spent some time getting to know the characters and their motivations, the rest of the story came together. I often say that the characters told their story to me rather than the other way around.
2. Who inspires you?
My children inspire me all the time. It's really motivating to see them with their entire lives ahead of them, free to discover who they are and who they want to be. It encourages me to try harder and to do better for them.
3. Who are some of your favourite authors?
Suspense is by far my favorite genre to read. Some of my favorite authors include Jodi Picoult, S.J. Watson, Paula Daly and Heather Gudenkauf. But I enjoy many other genres and authors as well, historical fiction and women's fiction to name a few. My favorite novel of all time is a Vietnam War memoir called THE THINGS WE CARRIED by Tim O'Brien.
4. Do you have any advice for people who want to become authors?
Never give up and practice, practice, practice! Becoming a published author takes a lot of patience. You will, no doubt, receive many rejections along the way (I certainly did!), but keep with it, and keep reading and writing and honing your skills as a writer. Let any rejections you receive be an incentive to try harder rather than a reason to quit.
5. I am really excited about the thought of The Good Girl being made into a movie, have you thought of any celeb you think would be perfect to play Mia?
I'm so excited, too, Beth! It's so much fun to think about who will play the various roles in a film version of the novel. For the character of Mia, Emma Watson is certainly someone who comes to mind, or Amanda Seyfried or Blake Lively. I can't wait to see how it all turns out!
6. What do you do when you're not writing?
I'm either hanging out with my kids or volunteering at a local animal shelter where I've worked for quite a few years. They're my favorite things to do!
Thank you so much for having me!
This is the page for when I'm luckily enough to do an interview with an author!
